When your pet needs more care than can be given at home, they can stay with us in the hospital for treatment, monitoring and rest.

Hospitalized pets may receive IV fluids, medications and close monitoring of their vital signs. We'll keep you updated on how your pet is doing and let you know when they're ready to go home.

Reasons Your Pet May Need to Be Hospitalized

Hospital care gives your pet treatment and monitoring that can be hard to provide at home. A stay may last a few hours or a few days, depending on your pet's condition and how quickly they respond. Your vet may recommend a hospital stay for:

  • Dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea or not eating
  • Recovery after surgery or anesthesia
  • Infections that need injectable medications
  • Toxin exposure or poisoning
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or other unstable conditions
  • Close observation while tests are run and a diagnosis is reached
  • Pain control after an injury

What to Expect While Your Pet Is in Our Care

When your pet is admitted, your vet will explain the treatment plan and what we'll be watching for. During the day, our team checks on hospitalized pets regularly, tracking vital signs, appetite, comfort and response to treatment. We'll call you with updates and let you know if anything changes.

You're welcome to bring a familiar blanket or toy, along with any special food your pet eats. Please let us know about all medications and supplements your pet takes. When your pet is ready to go home, we'll go over discharge instructions, medications and follow-up care so you feel confident continuing their recovery at home.

Hospitalization: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit my pet while they are hospitalized?
Please call ahead to ask about visiting. Short visits can comfort some pets, while others rest better without the excitement. Our team will let you know what's best for your pet's condition and treatment schedule.
Will my pet be in pain while hospitalized?
Keeping your pet comfortable is a key part of hospital care. Your vet will watch for signs of pain and may give pain medication as part of the treatment plan. If you have concerns about your pet's comfort, ask our team at any time.
What should I bring when my pet is hospitalized?
Bring a list of your pet's medications and supplements, along with any special diet they eat. A familiar blanket or small toy can help your pet feel more at ease. Please leave items you'd be upset to lose at home.
How will I know when my pet can come home?
Your vet will watch for signs that your pet is stable, such as eating, staying hydrated and responding well to treatment. We'll keep you updated and call you when your pet is ready for discharge, then go over home care instructions together.
